110617 BEAST No. 1 sweeper: "Here we come, Asia"

They debuted a year and 8 months ago. BEAST has released 4 mini-albums and a full album and they became one of Korea’s greatest male idol groups. The first full album ‘Fiction and Fact’ hit 90,000 sales (according to Hanteo Aggregate System) and the title song ‘Fiction’ ranked first in every broadcast music program.

After wrapping-up their album promotions, they are set to go to Japan on the 21st. While still in their promotional activities, we met up with BEAST at Yeouido, Yeondeungpo-gu in Seoul’s Marriott Hotel on the noon of the 17th.

’Fiction is not a hook song, so we were worried about the popularity it was going to receive’

Lee Kikwang said, "We were worried about promoting a subdued song like ‘Fiction’ when the weather was getting hot. But anyway, there are a lot of people who give us a lot of love and we are grateful," reminiscing on their luck. In October of 2009, BEAST started with ‘Bad Girl’ and continuously evolved with ‘Shock’, ‘Breath’ and ‘Beautiful’. Their fanclub is estimated to have 200,000 B2UTYS. BEAST said, "The number of fans is increasing but with this promotion, we get the feeling that we are more loved by the public."

On BEAST’s first official album, there is even a self-written song by Yong Junhyung. The 5th track ‘Freeze’ is one of the works of Yong Junhyung in his studying of composing. Yong Junhyung said, "I didn’t like that fact that I was a rapper rapping with the lyrics someone else wrote for me. So I started making friends with the underground rappers and started to care more about my rapping". Yong Junhyung also added, "While the other members have their own personal activities, I was working at the recording studio, day and night" and "I am really proud to show off my work through this album".

Self composed song on the first official album, stepping out of the original idol image

"At first, the song was first heard by the CEO (Hong Seungsung, representative of CUBE Entertainment) and his reaction was ‘What is this’. I panicked. Later Shinsadong Tiger hyung said,‘I have received a lot of reactions like that before’ and also added ‘Grasses die but, don’t panic.' After it was determined that the song was going to be on the album, I was in charge of the directing. I didn’t want to order the other members around, but they told me to not worry about it and be comfortable. So I got comfortable."

Yong Junhyung pointed out that he wants to work with FT Island singer, Lee Hongki. He wants to corportate his style into a band. Yong Junhyung with Super Junior Kim Heechul, Supreme Team Simon D (SsamD), FT Island Lee Hongki and Choi Jonghun sometimes went together for ‘Chocoball’ social gatherings.

BEAST’s earning principles are ‘to divide equally among the six’ but Yong Junhyung’s is separate from the rest. He said, “The income is different every month. I neatly set aside some money for my parents. Firstly, I want to own my own recording studio and with the money I get, I plan to buy a house for my parents." Maknae Son Dongwoon added, “I want to buy my dad a new car,” with a smile.

Son Dongwoon said, “We are very busy with activities and whenever times get hard, I always think ‘I am glad that I became a singer’” and “If given a break, I want to go to on a one-week vacation to Jeju Island”.
